Waganakising to Harbor Springs

Drawing on original written documents and photographs from the society’s extensive collection, curator Beth Wemigwase explores the early history of our town, focusing on the rapid changes that inundated our community from the 1740s through the 1890s. From the community known as Waganakising – which means “it is bend” or "crooked tree" in the Odawa language – to its days as Little Traverse and eventually Harbor Springs, our town saw sweeping changes in settlement trends, economic base and lifestyles. If you love the uniqueness of Harbor Springs today, you will be fascinated by the story of how we got here.
