Journey to Sovereignty

Location: History Museum

Learn about the journey of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians to obtain federal reaffirmation and what that means to Odawa citizens.  Tribal sovereignty is the right of American Indians and Alaska Natives to govern themselves and is recognized by the U.S. Constitution. This includes the power to regulate internal affairs, protect and improve the welfare of tribal citizens, and preserve their cultural identities. Federally Recognized tribes have some of the same powers as state and federal governments.

Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians citizen Winnay Wemigwase will provide a historical look at the journey that LTBB tribal leaders endured in order to preserve and protect inherent sovereignty for the Waganakising Odawak today.

This talk will take place at the History Museum at 5:30 pm and advanced registration is strongly encouraged.
