Job Description:
The Development and Campaign Manager is responsible for the organization and implementation of the fundraising goals, and assists the Executive Director in campaign management for the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society (HSAHS). The Manager works in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, campaign volunteer leadership and other fundraising committee volunteers.  Strengthening existing and building new relationships with donors and stakeholders is paramount.  The Manager performs highly professional management and administrative work in planning, organizing, directing and implementing fundraising activities to ensure the financial well-being of the HSAHS.  This position reports directly to and receives direction from the HSAHS Executive Director.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time
  • Ability to work with various constituencies
  • Demonstrated leadership to initiate and motivate
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively as well as demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Prior development/campaign experience is preferred but not mandatory

Essential Duties:
  • Work with Executive Director to create, manage, and implement a development program to achieve the goals of a multi-year campaign focused on endowment, and including capital and annual giving goals.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director the ongoing process of prospect identification and donor relations including cultivation, communication and stewardship.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, develop and implement strategies for expanding major donor involvement and the donor base.
  • Participate directly in developing donor relationships through casual visits, formal meetings, events and social gatherings.
  • Work with campaign volunteer leadership and provide training and communication throughout the duration of the campaign for their active involvement and support.
  • Alongside the Executive Director, plan and oversee campaign-related events and fundraisers in cooperation with the HSAHS board and committees.
  • Plan, direct and implement marketing activities.  This includes oversight for the design and production of campaign communications.
  • Direct the communication and reporting to external and internal audiences on the campaign’s progress.
  • Monitor the fundraising and campaign budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
For 2018, this is a part-time position (approximately 20-25 hours per week) with a competitive wage commensurate with experience. This position will require additional hours during the busy summer season and attending special HSAHS events.

At a recent gathering of historical society and museum folk, our group facilitator started off our meeting by asking us to introduce ourselves, our organizations and, as an icebreaker of sorts, tell what we like most about living in northern Michigan in January.

My answer was simple. I like January because, slowly but surely, the days are getting longer. Those who know me well know that winter generally takes fourth place in my favorite season rankings. January ranks equally low amongst my favorite months. But in this new year, something was different about January.

HSAHS Building Triad

Last month, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society learned that we are the recipients of a 2009 Award of Excellence given by the Builders Exchange of Northwest Michigan in Traverse City. Our museum project was nominated by Spence Brothers, the general contractor for the renovation that was completed in December 2008.
